"I...was on the isle that is Patmos" recorded St John the Evangelist after his exile from Ephesus in 95 AD in his Book of Revelations written on the island that was to become a Christian shrine. In 1088 Byzantine Emperor Alexius granted scholar and monk St Christodoulos Latrenus the right to make Patmos an independent Christian principality and found an imposing Monastery in honour of St John still perfectly intact on the hill-crest of Chora.
